Section 2. What data is being collected
The Somatic Arts and Sciences Institute collects three types of data from website users/visitors:
1. Information you manually enter while taking one of our courses, such as your name, vocational license number, email address, physical address, etc. We collect this information because we have to in order to meet the regulatory requirements of our accrediting body the National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage & Bodywork (NCBTMB).
2. Information the website collects in the form of data files called “cookies”.
These cookies are used for only the following purposes:
a) They let us know that our advertising is working. We pay Google a lot of money to show ads about our website. If you clicked an advertisement to get to our website, a cookie will let us know through a process called “analytics.”
b) They allow us to link to our social media sites like Facebook, Instagram, etc.
c) If you are logging into our site (only Madriella students) it will help to remember your password on your computer.
We are not able to see what websites you visited before or after our website, where you shop, what your favorite flavor of ice cream is, or any other information.
3. Financial Information that you enter when you pay for the course. This is handled through Digital Product Delivery, a secure third-party website shopping cart. This means that your financial information is not stored on our website or in our servers. The only exception is the Madriella Doula Network Monthly payment program. In this case, your credit card information is collected via secure and encrypted SSL communication and is stored in a private offline server in our office in California.
Section 3. The legal basis for collecting this information
In order to take our courses the student must consent to the collection of the information listed in Section 2.1 above, specifically, your name, vocational license number, email address, physical address must be collected in order for us to report your successful completion to the State Massage Therapy Licensing Board, or the NCBTMB.
Processing this data is necessary for the performance of a our duty as continuing education providers. It is necessary for the performance of our mission to provide the legally required continuing education that our students require to maintain their vocational license.
Section 4. Data Sharing
As a provider of adult continuing education we may share the legally required information with your state licensing board. This is limited to your name, vocational license number, email address, physical address and the names of the courses you have taken and if you passed.
We DO NOT share the scores (they are pass/fail) or the number of times you have taken them.
We DO NOT share email addresses, names, website browsing history or any other information with any third party.
We do use a secure third-party shopping cart service (Digital Product Delivery) in order to protect your financial transactions.
Section 5. How your information is used
The information that you manually enter may be reported to your state licensing board (if they require us to report it).
For Doulas that are members of our Professional Network, we may verify that they have completed the program if this verification is requested by a potential employer. This is necessary to protect the public and to ensure the integrity of our Doula Certification course.
We DO NOT sell your information to third parties.
Section 6. How long your information is stored
Financial information is not stored on our website database. It is held by a secure third-party shopping cart service (Digital Product Delivery).
The only exception is the Madriella Doula Network Monthly payment program. In this case, your credit card information is collected via secure and encrypted SSL communication and is stored in a private offline server in our office in California.
Your student information will be retained for 7 years.
Section 8. Your rights pertaining to this policy
You have the right to request an audit of what information we have collected. This information will be delivered by email to the email address of the user/student. To protect the privacy of our users/students, this email address must be the same email address that was used when they enrolled in the course(s).
You have the right to be forgotten. At your request, we will erase of your information in our website. This includes all certificates earned, past transcripts and payment information (if applicable).
You have the right to complain about this policy or our data collection practices. To do so, simply fill out the contact us form and have at it.
